The original Graybill Hall was named after Professor Henry B. Graybill, who served from 1903 to 1926. He was principal of Lingnan Middle School and is best known to Lingnanians for creating the English lyrics of the school anthem. The melody of the anthem is from a ballad by H. S. Thompson in the 1850s. It became the anthem of Cornell University in 1870 and has since been adopted by numerous universities, including the American University in Beirut and Washington and Jefferson College. The song was translated into Chinese by Mr Chan Tsap-ng.]]>2022-01-03T03:49:00-05:00

]]>https://ln.omeka.net/items/show/164This watercolour sketch, signed by a student of Mr Szto Wai, includes the whole of Lingtaitsuen, including the rice-fields planted by the villagers.
In a letter written in 1942, Mr Szto Wai recaps his exchanges with a friend. "What's this? Tubes of paint! Good stuff, from India, and a brush too. Do you still have the kind of paper I gave you last week? Lefs make a quick sketch. The sun is right, the colors bright and sharp. You have two painting boards, don’t you? We’ll sit together behind the little kitchen, overlooking the village. A little foreground? Shall we put some trees by the corner of the building there, I mean the library? Better trim the rice fields a little - somewhat dishonest, I know - but 'it's alright, it's our picture after all.
Wait, what about the camphor trees! Any cobalt blue in that box? The sweep of the hill, the new dormitories with freshly painted walls, the library after a year of wind and weather, and the rest shaded by the old camphor trees. We still have room for a hill, without which this side would be too bare. We're done with the pencil sketch now. Let’s color it in.”]]>2022-01-03T03:49:00-05:00

This view is from the top of the hill. Thence, you can see fifty or sixty buildings, some half-hidden under big camphor trees, some exposed on the mountainside, with pink walls and purple roofs. What a charming scene, what a sunny day! Lingnan has found a new home at Lingtaitsuen (Lingnan University Village).]]>2022-01-03T03:49:00-05:00
